Buttons, clasps or a concealed front?
- Buttons: the classic bandhgala, usually five, often in antique gold or horn. Ceremonial but versatile. The Jaipur is this.
- Clasps: hooks or ornate clasps across an open or partly open neck. More decorative, and the clasps do all the work. The Jodhpur Neo has three.
- Concealed front: nothing visible from collar to hem. The most minimal and the most evening. The Noir is this.
Which colour Jodhpuri suit should I choose?

Which fabric is best for a Jodhpuri suit?
- Wool: the best all-round cloth. It breathes, holds a crisp collar and does not shine under flash. SALVE's Jodhpur Neo and Jaipur are fine wool.
- Velvet: for winter evenings. Rich and warm, but heavy indoors.
- Silk and jacquard: for grooms and ceremonial evenings. Beautiful, but they crease and are harder to wear again.
- Linen: for summer and daytime. Creases by design.
- Terry rayon: smooth and takes evening light well. SALVE's Noir is cut in it.
Avoid shiny polyester blends. They trap heat and photograph badly.
Plain or embroidered?
If you want to wear it more than once, plain. Embroidery ties a Jodhpuri suit to one kind of occasion. A plain suit with good buttons or clasps can go from a reception to a festive dinner to a formal event. Let one detail carry the emphasis: the buttons, a brooch, or the cloth itself.
How should a Jodhpuri suit fit?
- Collar: closed without pressing on your throat. You should be able to turn your head and swallow freely.
- Shoulder: the seam ends where your shoulder ends. This cannot be altered later.
- Chest: smooth, with no pulling between the buttons.
- Length: the jacket covers your seat, a little longer than a Western jacket.
- Sleeve: ends at the wrist bone, showing a little shirt cuff.
- Trousers: straight, with a short break so the line stays long.
Which Jodhpuri suit suits my build?
- Shorter: a single dark colour top to bottom and a concealed or button front make one long line.
- Broader or fuller: a slightly lower collar and a gently shaped waist; avoid heavy embroidery across the chest.
- Tall and slim: almost anything works; clasps or a textured cloth add presence.
- Short neck: a lower collar, or an open neck like the Jodhpur Neo's.
