Read the invitation, then read the venue
An Indian wedding reception is the one function where Western and Indian formalwear sit side by side and both are correct. The invitation tells you the formality; the venue tells you the register. A hotel ballroom in December asks for something sharper than a farmhouse lawn in October.
Three routes work, and all three are right:
- A dinner jacket or a peak-lapel occasion suit, if the evening leans Western.
- A bandhgala, if you want an Indian silhouette with evening discipline.
- A sherwani, if you are the groom or close family and the reception is the main event.
If you are a guest
Your job is to look considered and to not compete with the couple. A dinner jacket with a clean formal shirt, or a minimal evening bandhgala with the collar closed, does that without effort. Keep the accessories to one. A pocket square or a watch, not both plus a brooch.
The most common guest mistake
Over-decorating. A reception room is already full of pattern, light and colour. The outfit that works is usually the quietest one in the photograph, because the cut is doing the work.
If you are the groom
The reception is where most grooms want presence, and it is the right place for it. A statement dinner jacket with a pronounced lapel, a double-breasted tuxedo, or a lean evening sherwani will all hold a crowded room. Choose one point of emphasis and let everything else recede.
Two practical notes. First, you will be standing and being photographed for hours, so the jacket has to close cleanly without pulling at the waist. Second, whatever you wear will be seen from every angle in a receiving line, so the three-quarter view matters as much as the front.
What about black tie?
If the invitation specifies black tie, wear a tuxedo. An Indian formal silhouette is a fine alternative at a black-tie-adjacent event, but when the card is explicit, the conventional answer is the safe one.
Footwear and the rest
- Polished formal shoes or sleek loafers. Nothing with a heavy sole.
- No belt with formal trousers; side adjusters or braces instead.
- The trouser should have little or no break, so the line stays clean when you stand still.
- If the neck is open, the shirt collar has to hold its shape on its own.
Timing
