What the Nocturne is

A formal double-breasted tuxedo cut in fine wool. The Nocturne balances a clean, tailored line with the quiet lustre of satin. Its 6x2 dinner jacket is shaped through the chest and waist with a natural shoulder, satin peak lapels, satin-covered buttons and jetted pockets. Half-canvas construction gives the jacket structure while allowing it to settle naturally with wear.

The matching straight, mid-rise trousers have a flat front, side adjusters and a satin side stripe. Cut for black-tie receptions, galas and evening weddings.

Offered in two cloths: black, and midnight blue, the older of the two conventions and the one that reads blacker than black under evening light.

  • One satin note on the lapel is enough. Keep the shirt plain and the studs small.

Questions, answered

Black or midnight blue?

Midnight blue is the older convention and reads blacker than black under artificial light, which is where a tuxedo spends its life. Black is the safer, stricter choice and the one most people picture. Both are correct for black tie.

Do I need a cummerbund or a waistcoat?

No. A double-breasted dinner jacket is worn closed, and the wrap covers the waist. That is the point of it.

Can I wear it with a black tie that is not a bow tie?

Not if the invitation says black tie. The bow tie is the rule; everything else is a different dress code.

How is this different from After Dark?

After Dark is the single-breasted tuxedo. The Nocturne is the double-breasted one: more formal, worn closed, and no waist covering needed.

Is a tuxedo worth it if I wear black tie once a year?

If you wear it three times it has already cost less per evening than hiring. If you wear it once, hire.
