Which colours suit Indian skin?
There is no single Indian skin tone, so there is no single answer. Light or deep skin is not better or worse for colour. What decides it is how three things work together: your undertone, the contrast between your skin and your hair, and the depth of your skin. Get those right and almost any colour family has a shade that works on you. Get them wrong and the most expensive cloth in the room makes you look tired.
1. Find your undertone
Most Indian men have a warm or neutral undertone, and a smaller number are cool. Three quick tests, in daylight:
- The wrist. Veins that look green suggest warm. Blue or purple suggests cool. Hard to tell usually means neutral.
- Gold or silver. If a gold watch or ring looks better against your skin, you are probably warm. If silver does, cool.
- White or ivory. Hold a stark white shirt and an ivory one under your chin. If ivory makes you look healthier, you are warm. If white does, cool.
2. Check your contrast
Contrast is the difference between your skin and your hair and beard. Most Indian men have dark hair, so the contrast depends mostly on the skin.
- High contrast (lighter skin, very dark hair): strong pairings echo your own colouring, such as a black bandhgala with ivory trousers, or midnight blue with white.
- Medium or low contrast (deeper skin, dark hair): tonal outfits look especially polished, such as chocolate on cream, bottle green on olive or navy on mid-blue. Rich jewel tones and crisp ivory or white next to the face look striking too.
3. The colours, by family
| Colour | Who it suits | How to wear it |
|---|---|---|
| Midnight blue and navy | Almost everyone | The safest dark colour for weddings and evenings. Softer than black on deeper skin. |
| Chocolate brown | Warm and neutral undertones | Rich in candlelight. Wear it with cream or ivory rather than white. |
| Bottle green and olive | Warm and neutral undertones | Excellent on medium and deep skin. Velvet in deep green is one of the best evening colours there is. |
| Wine, maroon and rust | Warm undertones, most depths | Traditional for a reason. Keep the rest of the outfit quiet. |
| Ivory, cream and off-white | Warm and neutral undertones | Kinder than stark white on most Indian skin, especially in photographs. |
| Stark white | Cool undertones, and deep skin, where it gives strong contrast | Sharp, but can wash out lighter skin with a warm undertone. Try ivory first. |
| Black | Most people, for evenings | Formal and strong. Under flash it can lose detail, so midnight blue often photographs better. Many families avoid black at pujas and wedding ceremonies; ask. |
| Pastels: sky blue, mint, blush | Most people in the right shade: softer pastels on lighter skin, clearer ones on deeper skin | Pick a dusty, slightly greyed pastel rather than a sugary one. Good for day functions. |
| Mustard and saffron | Medium and deep warm skin | Lovely at a haldi or mehendi. Close to the face, test it in daylight. |
| Khaki and beige | Deeper skin; risky on light warm skin | Too close to some skin tones and the outfit disappears. Add contrast at the collar. |
4. What sits next to your face matters most
The colour of a trouser hardly affects how you look. The colour of the collar, shirt and jacket around your face does. If you love a colour that does not suit you, wear it lower down, or put a shirt or kurta that does suit you between it and your face.
5. Light changes everything
- Daylight is honest. Choose day-function colours outdoors, not under shop lights.
- Warm evening light and candles flatter browns, wines, greens and gold, and flatten black.
- Flash photography blows out stark white and turns some blacks grey. Ivory and midnight blue photograph more reliably.
Try the cloth on your skin
Swatches on a screen lie. At a home appointment the cutter holds each cloth against your face in your own light, and you choose with your own eyes. Book a home appointment in Gurugram or Delhi, or read what to wear to a haldi, mehendi and sangeet.
Questions, answered
What colour suits dark Indian skin?
Midnight blue, bottle green, wine, chocolate and rust, plus ivory and crisp white next to the face. Rich jewel tones look striking, and tonal outfits look especially polished.
Does white suit Indian skin?
Stark white suits cool undertones and looks striking on deep skin. On lighter skin with a warm undertone, ivory or off-white is usually kinder, in photographs too.
Is black or navy better for a wedding?
Midnight blue or navy for most people. It reads as black at night and photographs better under flash. Many families also avoid black at the wedding ceremonies, so ask before you wear it.
How do I know if I have a warm or cool undertone?
Check your wrist veins in daylight: green suggests warm, blue or purple suggests cool. If gold looks better on you than silver, you are probably warm.
Which colours should men with wheatish skin avoid?
Khaki and beige close to the face, which can blend into the skin, and very bright neon shades. Wear them lower down or add contrast at the collar.
