How should a tuxedo fit?
A well-fitting tuxedo is smooth, not tight. Check it from the top down:
- Shoulder: the seam ends where your shoulder ends. No dent in the sleeve below it, no overhang.
- Collar: the jacket collar sits against the shirt collar, with about half an inch of shirt showing above it at the back.
- Chest: the lapels lie flat. When buttoned, no X-shaped pulling at the button.
- Waist: gently shaped, so the jacket follows you rather than hanging like a box.
- Sleeve: a quarter to half an inch of shirt cuff shows with your arms at your sides.
- Length: the jacket covers your seat.
- Trousers: sit at or near the natural waist, and fall straight with little or no break on the shoe.
How is a tuxedo fit different from a suit?
A tuxedo fits slightly cleaner than a suit, for two reasons. First, black tie is a static dress code: you stand and talk more than you move, so the jacket can be closer. Second, the satin catches light, and every wrinkle shows. The trousers also sit higher than most suit trousers, because at the waist nothing is allowed to show between the trousers and the buttoned jacket.
Where should tuxedo trousers sit?
At or near the natural waist, higher than jeans or most modern suit trousers. With a single-breasted jacket the cummerbund covers the waistband; with a double-breasted jacket the wrap covers it. Either way there should never be a band of shirt showing. Tuxedo trousers have no belt loops, so side adjusters or braces hold them up.
How much break should tuxedo trousers have?
None, or a slight one. The hem should just touch the top of the shoe at the front. A clean, unbroken line is what separates a tuxedo from a dark suit, and at a black-tie event you are standing still for most of the night, so the line is visible. Bring the shoes you will wear to the fitting.

So the shoulder is the first thing to get right. If an off-the-rack tuxedo does not fit your shoulders, no alteration will save it; that is the strongest reason to have one made.
How many fittings does a made-to-measure tuxedo need?

Tell the cutter about anything that has gone wrong in past jackets, such as sleeves that always run long or a collar that stands away, so the pattern can start from there.
Should a tuxedo be tight?
No. A tuxedo should be close, not tight. Tight tailoring pulls at the button, creases when you sit, and shows every strain under flash. If you cannot reach forward to shake hands without the jacket pulling across the back, it is too small.
How should a double-breasted tuxedo fit?
The same as a single-breasted one at the shoulder and sleeve, with two differences: it is worn buttoned all evening, so it must be comfortable closed, including when you sit; and the wrap must lie flat without pulling at the anchor button.
