What does smart casual mean?
Tailored, but relaxed. You look as though you chose your clothes rather than put them on. There is no tie, but there is structure somewhere: a jacket, a collar, a sharp trouser. It is the dress code of good restaurants, networking evenings, creative offices and most parties that are not weddings.

The five pieces that make it easy
- An unstructured jacket in linen, cotton or wool with little padding. The Viraj is cut for exactly this.
- Tailored trousers that are not suit trousers, in cotton, linen or flannel. A pleated trouser looks deliberate.
- Two good shirts: a white or blue oxford and a linen shirt. Cut to your measurements if you can.
- A fine knit: a merino crew-neck or a knitted polo.
- Loafers in suede or leather, and a pair of plain white leather sneakers.

Smart casual in Indian heat
Swap the knit for linen, the wool jacket for an unlined linen or cotton one, and the socks for invisible ones. A short-sleeved camp-collar shirt with good trousers counts as smart casual in most places from April to September.
Common mistakes
- A suit jacket worn as a blazer. Suit cloth looks orphaned without its trousers.
- Running shoes. Sneakers should be plain leather.
- Everything casual except one formal piece, such as a tie with jeans and a T-shirt.
- Poor fit. Relaxed clothes still need to fit at the shoulder and the hem.
