What to wear over a bandhgala or tuxedo in a Delhi winter

Over a tuxedo or suit at a Delhi winter wedding, wear a dark, plain wool overcoat long enough to cover the jacket. Over a bandhgala, achkan or sherwani, a plain dark shawl is the traditional answer; a coat only works if it is longer than the garment beneath. Keep the outer layer quieter than the outfit.

What should a man wear over his wedding clothes in a Delhi winter?

Over Western formalwear (a tuxedo, a suit), a dark, plain wool overcoat that is long enough to cover the jacket completely. Over Indian formalwear (a bandhgala, an achkan, a sherwani), a plain dark shawl is the traditional and correct answer, and a coat only works if it is longer than the garment underneath. Whatever you choose, the outer layer should be quieter than what is under it, because it comes off for the photographs.

Under it Best outer layer Avoid
Tuxedo or dinner jacket A navy, charcoal or black overcoat, single-breasted, below the knee A puffer, a leather jacket, anything casual
Suit An overcoat in navy, charcoal, camel or brown A short jacket that stops above the suit hem
Bandhgala or Jodhpuri suit A plain dark shawl, or an overcoat with a soft, roomy shoulder A tight coat that crushes the standing collar
Achkan or sherwani A shawl, or a coat clearly longer than the achkan Any coat shorter than the achkan
Kurta with a Nehru jacket A shawl, or a heavier wool Nehru jacket A sports jacket worn over the Nehru jacket

Why not just wear a heavier jacket?

Because most December functions move between a heated hall and an open lawn, sometimes several times in an evening. A separate outer layer lets the clothes underneath stay the right weight for indoors, and you take it off when it is time to be photographed. A wedding outfit cut from very heavy cloth is uncomfortable for most of the night.

The overcoat: what to look for

  • Length. Below the knee over a tuxedo or a suit. The jacket hem should never show beneath the coat.
  • Shoulder. Room enough to go over a structured jacket without pulling. A raglan or softer set-in shoulder is kinder to a bandhgala's collar and to tailored shoulders.
  • Colour. Navy and charcoal go with everything. Camel looks right over a suit and wrong over a tuxedo. Black is the most formal.
  • Cloth. A dense wool or wool-cashmere. It needs to block wind on an open lawn, not just look warm.
  • Front. Single-breasted is cleaner over black tie; double-breasted is warmer and more of a statement over a suit.

The shawl: the Indian answer

A plain shawl in wool or pashmina, draped over one shoulder or both, is the correct outer layer over a bandhgala, achkan or sherwani. It suits the clothes in a way a Western coat often does not, and it can stay on in photographs. Keep it plain or tone-on-tone, in a colour that is quieter than the garment: charcoal, camel, ivory or a deep shade of the outfit's own colour. Leave the heavily embroidered shawls to the groom.

The details that keep you warm without showing

  • The cloth of the outfit itself. Fine wool, wool flannel or velvet for winter evenings; leave linen and light silks for the day.
  • A full lining in a bandhgala or a dinner jacket for December.
  • A fine merino layer under the shirt or kurta, invisible and far warmer than it looks.
  • Proper socks and closed shoes. Cold feet decide when you leave a lawn function.

Common mistakes

  • A short puffer or bomber over a sherwani.
  • A coat shorter than the jacket or achkan under it.
  • A loud, patterned coat over an already decorated outfit.
  • Wearing the coat in every photograph. Take it off for the important ones.

Questions, answered

What do men wear over a sherwani in winter?

A plain shawl in wool or pashmina is the traditional answer. If you wear a coat, it must be longer than the sherwani or achkan.

Can you wear an overcoat over a bandhgala?

Yes, if the coat has a roomy, soft shoulder and enough space at the neck not to crush the standing collar. A plain dark shawl is the more traditional choice.

What coat goes over a tuxedo?

A navy, charcoal or black wool overcoat, single-breasted and below the knee, so the dinner jacket does not show beneath it.

Is a puffer jacket acceptable at an Indian wedding?

Not over formal clothes. It reads casual over a tuxedo, suit or sherwani. Choose an overcoat or a shawl.

What colour overcoat is most versatile for weddings?

Navy or charcoal. Camel suits daytime and suits, but looks wrong over black tie.

How do I stay warm at an outdoor December wedding in Delhi?

Choose winter cloth for the outfit itself, a full lining, a fine merino layer underneath, closed shoes, and a separate overcoat or shawl that comes off for photographs.
