Five ways to put it together

The kit What is in it Total
The essentials After Dark, Dress Shirt, Black Tie, Onyx Set ₹56,000
Double-breasted The Nocturne, Dress Shirt, Black Tie, Onyx Set, White Square. No waistcoat or cummerbund needed ₹58,000
Velvet for winter The Midnight, Dress Shirt, Velour Bow, Onyx Set, White Square ₹60,000
The groom's three-piece After Dark, Low Cut, Dress Shirt, Black Tie, Onyx Set, White Square ₹70,000
The dinner jacket route The Velour, Evening Line, Dress Shirt, Velour Bow, Onyx Set ₹74,000

Six judgements on spending it

  1. Very good.

    Spend on the jacket first.

It is what people see and what the camera finds. A jacket cut to you, in a proper cloth, carries a plain shirt. The reverse is never true.

  2. Don't.

    Save on the shirt.

The collar and cuffs are at your face and your hands, under flash. A thin shirt with a soft collar shows all night.

  3. Good.

Midnight blue, if you buy one.

It reads richer than black under evening light, and it is correct everywhere black is.

  4. Good.

    Double-breasted saves the waist.

It stays fastened, so it needs neither a waistcoat nor a cummerbund. That is between ₹5,500 and ₹12,000 you do not spend.

  5. Don't.

    A waistcoat and a cummerbund.

One or the other. Buying both is buying one you will never wear.

  6. Depends.

    Renting instead.

For one evening abroad, perhaps. A rented tuxedo was cut for someone else and pinned for you. In a Delhi season with two receptions and a New Year party, owning one costs less per evening and fits every time.
